Hormones! We need more information!

‘So Hormonal’ - a timely reminder of generations of missing information

I will be going on about hormones fairly often on this blog because we all need more info about them. Many of us know something, likely connected to our own hormonal make-up and needs, or those of someone close to us.

‘Within the normal range’?

But along with the ongoing realisation that something is going on in our bodies that we don’t always understand, comes the reminder that we are not taught enough about hormones. We can spend years being told that we are ‘within the normal range’ when actually this is not enough.

It’s complex.

I’ve banged on about how hormones are not gendered - all bodies need oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone to function - but this message is hard to get across when our society is founded on a gender binary that actually benefits very few people, but still exerts control over everything we do.

So Hormonal

So Hormonal - A Collection of Essays on Hormones is published by Monstrous Regiment (who also have a fabulous logo), and edited by Emily Horgan and Zachary Dickson. I jumped on it when I saw it as I’ve been hoping someone would bring out something like this. Many hormonally-framed aspects of life appear here, as well as menopause. Many speak of the heartache of waiting years for diagnosis or help, especially regarding endometriosis. Others of the self-micromanaging so many people have to do when monitoring our own mental and physical wellbeing, and the tightrope we walk along when we are also negotiating with healthcare practitioners. Some of the hormones in this book are endogenous, others exogenous. I highly recommend it.

seeking a speaker

I have been seeking a trans and menopause friendly medical person to come and do a webinar on sex hormones, specifically for therapists. This would be a paid gig, and I am still looking. [hopeful face]
